They were lined up in an almost orderly fashion, parents milling about, everyone excited for the 1st grade thanksgiving feast. Arriving late Leo hugs Steve and I and shows me his woven construction paper placemat. Then he heads to wash his hands. I think it is because of the smile, but his classmates part like the red sea to allow him to wash his hands first. I elbow Steve and hiss “Did you see him cut the line?” I wait for the natural consequence, a protest from the group, and exclamation Read more […]

Name Brand

I am the same person I was yesterday. But words have power, and labels change things, as much as we try to look through and beyond them. Your son has Asperger’s syndrome. You hear this with a strange mix of relief and misery. Relief that the label might frame the conversation, point towards useful interventions, be HELPFUL. But dread because you know words can hurt, diagnoses can narrow our focus from a whole person to a set of symptoms. Richie Incognito, a leader in the Dolphin’s defense wrote Read more […]

Bridge Burning

For two weekends we worked together. The kids, little and littler carried planks a mile through the woods and stacked them carefully. Several grownups hung cables and attached rope railings. In the end it was impressive. Almost 10 feet above what is currently an unimpressive river we remember the floods of the last few years. We wanted something higher, stronger, more permanent. It is a way to conquer nature and appreciate it at once. Three neighborhoods came together to build the bridge so Read more […]

Procrastination, perfectionism, depression

Go head and click these links if you want to understand the references. If you don’t click this will go faster and be a less effective procrastination tool. Why procrastinators procrastinate. (more like how…but its mostly brilliant so we can let that go.) How to beat procrastination. (Or start to beat it…) Years ago I was planning to build a procrastination app but I never got around to it. As much as that sounds like a 2010 iOS conference punchline it is the truth. I wanted an app Read more […]

Part of Speech

This WordPress site is built on the “Verb” template. How active! What a wonderful template for writing, posting, promoting. It made me wonder how much like a verb each day is.  Which made me wonder about other parts of speech. Verb- A verb asserts something about the subject of the sentence and express actions, events, or states of being. A verb day is active. You are ing ing. This can be physical or mental. Striving towards the state of awareness is double verby. Things are not Read more […]

Everything needs a gripping headline. Our attention is short and fleeting, so each word counts. It started with the media- “what common household items will kill all your pets, answer at 11.” Now we are all the media. Full stories need to be sensationalized into 140 characters. We love to see the friendship between the kitten and the gorilla, but even better is the guy falling off the roof. There is no slow play in story telling. Parents are an easy target. DO play music, DON’T allow screen Read more […]

Help me help me.

Dear CN, I’ve spent the past 24 months trying to come up with a good excuse to meet you. See, that came out even MORE stalker-ish than I intended. I have not spent 24 months on this, it has passed in and out of my brain over the course of 24 months. I have been reading Dalai Mama since blinkies on babycenter felt like a totally logical way to count down to a due date. As if my first kids wasn’t going to be 7 weeks early, even earlier than I am for everything. I go to Truro the same week you Read more […]

I got the very best comment ever on my blog sometime late last night. It was in response to my depression/lazy flow chart farce. It went like this: “Are you fucking joking? Do you really think this tone deaf shit is funny? Ps you are 100% white and have never wanted for anything, aren’t you?” To which I wrote: “This particular post is sort of a joke. Although I do spend a fair amount of time in the borders between my good weeks and bad weeks wondering if I am more lazy than depressed. The Read more […]

No title.

If it didn’t worry me it would almost be pleasant. I feel my breath in and out, my eyelids, the almost imperceptible difference between the mattress and me. The sounds of my life are outside my bubble. Leo’s incoming skype call from an unseen minecraft buddy. Oliver dragging the desk across his floor. The peeing cat’s yowl to come inside. The way the heat sounds like the dryer. Or is it the dryer? No. Its the heat. We have given in and turned it on. Every piece of me feels leaden. Like the Read more […]
